Background of the Study
University seminars in Nigeria are central to academic discourse, yet the clarity of these lectures often depends on the syntactic coherence of the speaker’s delivery. Syntactic coherence refers to the logical flow and structural consistency of sentence construction, which is critical for effective knowledge transfer (Okoro, 2023). In Nigerian public lectures, speakers navigate a complex interplay between formal academic language and colloquial influences, resulting in varied syntactic patterns. This study investigates how syntactic coherence is achieved in university seminars by comparing lectures across different institutions and disciplines. It examines the use of transitional devices, clause integration, and sentence organization to evaluate the overall clarity and persuasiveness of the presentations (Afolabi, 2024). The research also considers how cultural and educational backgrounds influence the speakers’ syntactic choices, impacting student comprehension and engagement. By conducting discourse analyses and collecting feedback from seminar attendees, the study aims to identify best practices for enhancing syntactic coherence and improving the overall effectiveness of public lectures (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of syntactic coherence in ensuring the clarity of university seminars, there is limited systematic research on this aspect of academic discourse in Nigeria. Existing studies have largely focused on content quality and presentation skills, while the structural elements of language receive less attention (Eze, 2023). The resulting lack of data hampers efforts to standardize lecture delivery and improve student comprehension. Furthermore, the influence of diverse linguistic backgrounds on syntactic coherence remains underexplored, creating challenges for educators aiming to deliver uniformly comprehensible lectures. This study seeks to fill these gaps by providing a comparative analysis of syntactic structures in university seminars, thereby offering insights into how to enhance academic communication (Obi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the syntactic structures employed in Nigerian university seminars.
  2. To assess the coherence and clarity of public lectures.
  3. To propose recommendations for improving syntactic organization in academic discourse.

Research Questions

  1. What syntactic patterns are most prevalent in Nigerian university seminars?
  2. How does syntactic coherence affect student comprehension?
  3. What strategies can improve the structural clarity of academic lectures?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed examination of the syntactic elements that contribute to effective academic communication in Nigeria. By identifying the factors that enhance or hinder syntactic coherence, the research will offer valuable insights for educators and curriculum developers. The findings will inform teaching practices and help standardize lecture delivery, ultimately improving student learning outcomes (Okoro, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the syntactic analysis of university seminars in Nigerian public lectures and does not include private or online lectures.

Definitions of Terms

  • Syntactic Coherence: The logical and structural consistency of sentence construction.
  • University Seminars: Academic presentations held in higher education institutions.
  • Public Lectures: Formal educational talks aimed at disseminating knowledge.
